Magnet Apprentice Orchestra
6th Grade
Magnet Apprentice Orchestra is designed for students who are interested in playing a stringed instrument (violin, viola, cello, bass) for the first time. Emphasis is on learning basic musical skills such as rhythm, note reading, posture and learning how to perform as a group. Student prepare a number of concert selections that are performed for an audience. Students should anticipate some after school/evening performances.
Magnet Intermediate Orchestra
7th Grade
Prerequisite: Magnet Apprentice Orchestra or teacher recommendation. Students will study solo and orchestral literature from a variety of time periods and cultures. Emphasis is on varied bowing, ear training, identifying and playing various styles and the deeper understanding of musical terms. Students prepare a number of concert selections that are performed for an audience. Students should anticipate some after-school practices and evening performances.


Guild Orchestra
7th & 8th Grade
Prerequisite: Placement by audition only. Magnet Honors Orchestra students should have at least two years of previous orchestral instruction in order to take this course. Students will continue to master scales and technique. Extended ranges, shifting, and further study of good intonation are emphasized, along with in-depth study of style and interpretation. Students are encouraged to perform on an individual basis and participate in small or large ensembles. Students prepare a number of concert selections that are performed for an audience. Students should anticipate some after-school practices and performances.
Exploring Music Through Science & Technology
8th Grade - Semester Long
This course is designed to expand student cultural perspectives by providing a variety of experience including improvising, composing, arranging, and analyzing, performing and exploring music and related arts of a variety of styles using technology.
