Practice Reflection

Due Every Monday

Home practice is critical for student success in orchestra. Therefore, students are required to complete a practice reflection every week. The practice reflection has three parts: a goal for the week, steps the students will take to achieve that goal, and a reflection of how their practice went for the week. Students will be graded on the quality of their reflections (thoughtful goals and practice steps, thorough reflection of their practice, and complete sentences).

Parents and families can support students in their home practice in the following ways:

  1. Help them with time management. Instead of practicing one or two days a week for long periods of time, encourage them to practice daily (or as many days as possible) in shorter time periods.

  2. Check in on their posture. Students should be sitting up straight with their feet flat on the floor when playing their instrument. Practicing with bad posture can lead to muscle strain, prevent the student from playing with a good tone, and can hold them back from being able to play more difficult repertoire.

  3. Isolate difficult sections and/or practice slowly. If you notice your student getting frustrated during practice, encourage them to slow down and practice smaller sections of the piece. Often times students will practice by starting at the beginning of the piece and playing through the whole thing. If they do this every time, they won't be able to improve specific techniques or passages that are difficult for them.

  4. Encourage them! Make it a point to sit and listen when possible. Compliment them on their progress and playing. Students will be much more motivated to practice if they feel encouraged by their families.
